I. Imaginary Biography

First a childhood, limitless and without renunciation or goals.
O unselfconscious joy.
Then suddenly terror, barriers, schools, drudgery,
and collapse into temptation and loss.
Defiance. The one bent becomes the bender,
and thrusts upon others that which it suffered.
Loved, feared, rescuer, fighter, winner
and conqueror, blow by blow.
And then alone in cold, light, open space,
yet still deep within the mature erected form,
a gasping for the clear air of the first one, the old one . . .
Then God leaps out from behind his hiding place.

II. The Angel

They all have weary tongues
and bright, seamless souls.
And a yearning (as for sin) sometimes goes through their dream.
They all seem so alike;
in God's garden silent they remain, like many, many intervals
in his power and melody.
Only when their wings spread out, are they the awakeners of a wind:
as if God with his broad hands
of a sculptor went through the pages of the beginning's dark book.

Lyrics

Translation:

III. On the Verge of Night

My room and this vastness,
awake over parroting land, - are one.
I am a string, strung over rustling wide resonances.
The things are violin bodies,
full of grumbling dark;
inside the wifes' weeping is dreaming,
inside the rancour of whole dynasties is stirring in the sleep...
I shall
shake silverly: then
everything underneath me will live,
and what errs in the things,
will strive after the light,
which falls from my dancing tone,
around which heaven waves,
through narrow, yearning cracks,
into the old
endless chasms...
